Entry Level Writing Program Requirement Information

All University of California students must fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR). Students who enter UC directly from California high schools will satisfy this requirement with a test score of 680 or higher on the College Board's SAT-II Writing Test or SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section; a 30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing Test; a 3, 4, or 5 on either Advanced Placement (AP) Examination in English; a 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate's High Level English A Examination or a 6 or higher on the IB’s Standard Level English A; a grade of C or better in an acceptable college course in English composition; or a composite score of 8 or higher on the Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) administered in May of their senior year. Out-of-state students and students admitted late may take the AWPE during Orientation Week at UCD. As per UC policy, students may take the AWPE only once.

THE ENTRY LEVEL WRITING REQUIREMENT AND WORKLOAD 57

At UC Davis, new students who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement prior to enrollment must take Sacramento City College's Workload 57, a basic writing course taught on the Davis campus that carries 4.5 units of UCD workload credit. A grade of C or higher in Workload 57 will satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement. The AWPE will continue to be given as the course’s final examination and will be figured into the course grade calculation. Students who do not pass Workload 57 with a grade of C or higher must retake the course the following quarter.

All UC students have three quarters in which to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement.

TRANSCRIPTS

Students will receive a transcript from Sacramento City College showing the grade they earned in Workload 57. Although this grade will not affect the GPA, students should be aware that they will be required to submit transcripts of all undergraduate work when they apply for graduate or professional school.

NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH

Non-native speakers of English who have resided in the U.S. for fewer than four years or who have scores of 480 or below on the SAT I-Verbal or on the SAT-II Writing may be held for one or more courses in Linguistics before they can attempt to satisfy the Entry Level Writing requirement. Students are especially encouraged to enroll in Workload 57 for non-native speakers. These special sections, taught by instructors with ESL training, are limited to 18 students. Non-native speakers of English will have three quarters in which to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement plus the number of quarters they are held for Linguistics.

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR STUDENTS

The Entry Level Writing program offers peer tutoring for all Workload 57 students. To sign up, students should go to the Program office, 116 Voorhies. EOP, ESL, and STEP students may also sign up for tutoring at the Learning Skills Center with writing specialists and/or peer tutors. In addition, all students are eligible for the Learning Skills Center's quarterly workshops. If students wish to review their Analytical Writing Placement Examination, they may make an appointment with the Entry Level Writing Director during the school year.
